Making a Difference

Making a Difference: Marc Roemer with his tip jar at Shucker's Oyster Bar.

It started with a large jar and a desire to make a positive difference in our community.

The jar, with Marc Roemer standing close by, can be found at Shucker's Oyster Bar, 4814 SE Highway 101 in the Taft District of Lincoln City.

Roemer uses the jar to collect tips on "Give a Dam Day." It is one day in each December for the past 14 years, that Roemer sets aside all his tips as a bartender at Shucker's. The money collected goes for gift certificates at local businesses. The gift certificates are given to local teens in need.

“I wanted to do something nice for charity,” Roemer told The News Guard in an interview in 2015. “Someone mentioned to me about the plight of teens and how they are often over looked. That made sense to me and I decided to take action.”

Each Christmas holiday season The News Guard checks in with Roemer to see how his Give a Dam Day went.

"This year, we have collected $2,650" he said following the donation drive on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Roemer said he's collected more than $50,000 since he began the charity fundraiser and while he said the effort feels good, he gives credit to the patrons at Shucker's and others who help.

"I also want to thank the Lincoln City Outlet, which has donated $500 for the gift certificates and Schooner Creek Acoustic Band for participating," he said.
