Fatal Crash

The following update is from Newport Police concerning a fatal traffic crash on Dec. 10. The crash involved a Lincoln City resident who suffered minor injuries.

The drivers of the vehicles involved in the fatal crash on Highway 101in the NW 68th Street area on Dec. 10 have been identified. The driver of the Geo Metro is identified as Candous Lee Holberg, 52, of Waldport. Holberg was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer is identified as Jacqueline Eve Read, 34, of Lincoln City. Read's passenger was identified as Carl Vincent Davidson, 44, South Beach. Read and Davidson suffered minor injuries during the crash.

The crash remains under of investigation.

Newport Police report one person has died and there were multiple injured occupants following a head-one traffic crash on Highway 101 at NW 68th Street.

According to a release from Newport Police, at about 8 p.m. on December 10, the Newport Police Department and Newport Fire were dispatched to the area of NW 68th Street and Highway 101, on the report of a head-on collision.

Newport Police officers and Oregon State Police arrived and determined two vehicles were involved and there were multiple injured occupants, including one occupant trapped inside a vehicle.

The investigation revealed a white GEO Metro headed southbound on Highway 101 had crossed the center line where it crashed head on into a Chevrolet S10 Blaser, which had been traveling northbound.

Newport Fire and Pacific West Ambulance arrived and pronounced the driver of the Geo, who was trapped inside the vehicle, deceased as a result of injuries.

The accident close Highway 101 at the 68th Street area for several hours. The highway has since reopened.

Investigators had not released the names of those involved in the crash as of Tuesday morning, Dec. 11.
