Duane Thomas Patterson

Duane Patterson was born in McMinnville, Oregon April 17, 1933 to Fred and Anna Patterson who owned a family farm in nearby Newberg.

As a child Duane helped work the family farm until he contracted polio and was bedridden and unable to attend school for a year. During this time he became an avid reader and once recovered enough to re-enter school he tested ahead of his class and was advanced a school year. 

Later the family moved to Tigard where he attended Tigard Union High School, graduating May 26, 1950 a month after his 17th birthday.

He continued his studies enrolling in Pacific University College of Optometry. While attending optometry school he worked and saved enough money to take flying lessons and obtained his pilots license at the age of 18. Duane graduated from Pacific University with top honors May 26, 1955 and soon after started his optometry practice In Lincoln City. 

Flying was a life long passion of Duane’s and he continued flying his Beechcraft Bonanza into his 80’s. He also enjoyed downhill skiing, fishing, playing golf and vacationing in Hawaii.

Duane will be deeply missed by his family and will be remembered in the community for his dedication to his profession and compassion for helping others. He was the longest practicing optometrist in the state of Oregon at the time of his passing. 

He was proceeded in death by his sister Margaret McHarness.

He is survived by his daughters Nancy Patterson; Suzanne Meckel(Kevin); 3 grandchildren, Connor, Erik, Megan and nephew Don McHarness(Lynn).
