Lawrence DuRette, Sr.

February 9, 1924 - June 24, 2019 

Lawrence (Larry) Alexander DuRette, Sr., 95, died Monday, June 24, 2019 at his home in Rose Lodge. Larry was born February 9, 1924, in Fairfield, Oregon, to F. Ralph and Mary Valerie DuRette.

The family bought a farm in what is now known as Charbonneau, and eventually moved back to the old family farm in Fairfield, where he farmed with his father.

Larry attended school in Canby Oregon and enlisted in the Navy at age 17, just before Pearl Harbor in September 1941. After boot camp in San Diego, California, Larry was stationed in Seattle for Aviation Mechanic School, worked on aircraft at Moffett Field, California, onto Pearl Harbor, and finally in Bremerton, Washington at time of his discharge. While home on leave in 1942, he married Betty Elaine Walruff. They had one child, Valerie during the war, and 5 more after. After the war, they built a house on the family farm in Fairfield, and eventually moved to Rose Lodge in 1959. Larry loved logging and operating heavy machinery, and eventually became a general contractor and developer. He bought numerous pieces of land and developed the Echo Mountain Sub-Division. He also cleared land for the North Lincoln Hospital, Safeway, Shilo Inn, Chinook Winds Casino, Inn at Spanish Head, Panther Creek, Mountain Meadow Springs and established the Widow Springs Rock Quarry. He voluntarily cleared land for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapels in Woodburn, Newport, and Lincoln City. He also served almost 10 years in the Volunteer Fire Department in Rose Lodge.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doral, and 6 children, Rosita Hasfjord, of Manly, Iowa; Michael Lucas, of Willis, Texas; Carol Burgess, of Vineyard, Utah; Laddie DuRette, Adrienne DuRette, and Benita DuRette, of Otis, Oregon. He is leaving behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his oldest daughter, Valerie James, of Otis, Oregon.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on July 6, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel on West Devils Lake Road, in Lincoln City, Oregon. Graveside Service will be on August 4, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fairfield Cemetery in Gervais, Oregon.
