David "Kid Krytonite" Converse, a Taft High School graduate, continues to chase his dream of a mixed martial arts (MMA) champion.

Converse competed Saturday, May 25, at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in the bout titled 'King of the Cage: Resurgence.'

The busy holiday weekend drew a large crowd of over a thousand spectators, who witnessed 10 fights held in the casino convention center. The main event pitted Ian King, from Roseburg, against Brandon Waltz from Paradise, Calif. King defeated Waltz in the title bout by forcing him to tap out with an arm hold.

Converse, an Otis resident and former high school state wrestling champion, defeated Alex Casteneda in the flyweight division to claim the title.

But the win carried much more weight than most for Converse, as he dedicated the fight to his late friend Kyle Boozer.

"Kyle was an amazing man, an amazing solider and an amazing son," Converse said. "Boozer, I'm not going to stop chasing my dream, we're both from this little town, I love you Boozer."
