Taft High School’s best of the best in athletics celebrated the 2019-20 school year with the annual Champions of Character Banquet on June 4.
Taft faculty handed out 10 different awards during the night to both athletes and coaches. Earning the Character Athlete award, given to athletes that have represented Taft with the utmost character throughout their career, were seniors Micah McLeish and Olivia Baker.
Taking home the Head Coach of the Year honor was wrestling coach Robb Ellis, who also accepted the award for Team of the Year, given to his wrestling program.
Assistant coach of the year was Ryan Gates and volunteer of the year was Lon French for their contributions throughout the long school year.
The cherished Lifetime Tiger award, given annually to a person that embodies what it is to be a Tiger and is at all the events, was given to Kristina Good.
The ‘Tuned’ Athlete award, which is given to athletes that excel both on the playing field/court and with their musical talents, was gifted to Trenton Fisher and Shelline Nerup. The Iron Tiger award, given to athletes that compete in all three seasons for four years of high school, went to five Taft High athletes: David Jin, Savannah Russo, Lydia Prins, William Brooks and Clay Nelson.
A whole slew of athletes were given the Taft Tiger Booster Award including David Jin, Tyee Fisher, Cody Knott, Bleiz Kimbrough, William Brooks, Logan McLendon, Justice Kane, Micah McLeish, Savannah Russo, Olivia Baker, Caitlyn Rundstrom, Lydia Prins and Violet Palermini.
Finally, Taft gave out the coveted male and female Athlete of the Year award, which went to David Jin and Savannah Russo.
